Alfa Romeo has been founded in Milan in 1910 as the Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili (Lombard Automobile Factory, Public Company). Romeo refers to Nicola Romeo who started directing the company in 1915.The Alfa Romeo badge contains two Milanese symbols. On the right-hand side the serpent emblem of the Visconti. The cross on the left are the colours of Milan.Alfa Romeo historyDuring both World Wars, Alfa predominantly produced military vehicles. During the 1930s it was owned by the government of Mussolini. After World War II, the company struggled to remain profitable, however eventually succeeded with the introduction of the Alfa Romeo Twin Cam engine which would continue to be produced until 1995.Despite the success of the twin cam engine, Alfa continued to have financial difficulties which led to its sale to the Fiat Group in 1986 which remains owner today.From the end of World War II into the 1970s, Alfa Romeo had a strong focus on the production of sports cars. In addition, Alfa was known throughout the 1960s for its production of cars designed for the Italian police including the Guilia Super and the 2600 Sprint GT.Alfa in sportFrom very early on, Alfa Romeo participated on the racing course.In 1925 Alfa became world champion of the manufacturers race. From 1931 to 1934 Alfa won the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
